It’s funny how the Stig evolved from a racing robot to being a character which without him the top gear wouldn’t be the same.

I still believe that the Stig is one of the best things ever conceived. Be it on tv or anywhere else. It was a stroke of absolute genius and it is absolutely hilarious when the Stig is out of his comfort zone (a car) and into the real world.

He was originally going to be called The Gimp (as in the BDSM leather clothed chap in pulp fiction) but the original Stig Perry McCarthy quite rightfully didn't want to be remembered as The Gimp so they changed the name to The Stig (A Stig is a name for a new boy at Repton School in England, where Clarkson and Andy Wilman went to school)
@Thomas Hayhurst Stig is a legit human first name in Norway. There's a Norwegian road rescue reality show being currently broadcast in my country, and one of the employees whom the cameras follow is named Stig.
There's also Stig of the Dump.

I love that to keep his identy secret, the Stig would come into the office with his helmet on and didn't talk much anyway, so only a few members of staff actually knew who he was- we, as the audience, saw the same things as many members of production. He may really have a picture of his wallet inside of his wallet
I don't want to be that guy, probably people in the set know who is the stig. When Ben Collins was the Stig he even appeared as Himself in the Show and being the Stig at the same time.

The main requirement of being the Stig is to keep your identity secret. The original Stig (Black Stig) was a racing driver called Perry, who’s identity was exposed after journalists for a British Sunday newspaper broke into the track and took footage of the behind the scenes bits, including an unmasked Stig. Thats why in S3 Black Stig was killed off by doing the aircraft carrier stunt. Ben Collins exposed his own identity by writing and publishing a tell-all book so he was sacked. So there are 2 references here: Hammond was referring to the first Stig, and James the second.

ok so guys michael schumacher isnt the only person who was stig he was only in that one episode. Lewis Hamilton, Heikki Kovalainen, Chris Goodwin, Dan Lang and Julian Bailey all were also stig. Perry McCarthy was the black stig Ben Collins was the main white stig
I think James May also wore the Stig suit at some point
