The island of Boracay in central Philippines is classified as one of the world's most beautiful islands. With an influx of thousands of tourists visiting its beaches annually, it generates millions of US dollars for the government from tourism revenue alone. But the increasing commercial development drove the island's indigenous tribe, the Atis, away from their homes. For decades, they have remained poor, uneducated and marginalized. And as the government tries to help them relocate by granting them a part of the island's most sought-after swathes of land by developers, the Atis worry for their safety Al Jazeera's Jamela Alindogan reports from Borocay.

  • I guess they're just social justice warriors that need to stop complaining, amIright?

  • Gago rin kc ang gobeyerno gusto nla alisan ng krapatan ang mga orihinal na tao dyan pra cla ang kumita

  • We have humanitarian work with Ati. www.mercymission.se

  • I would go to boracay if they provide jobs for the ati. They can do this through cultural tourism, promoting ati culture, their dances, folklore and history. Learning other culture is what makes traveling unique and memorable . One good example is Fiji.

  • I'm in fear for my people I can't do much as I'm an ati living in the United States but I fear for them

  • It all about Development. that why they been left out. The Government always favor with wealthier businessmen. Those people who discriminate because of skin color, need to be taught a painful lesson

  • I hate you Filipinos for treating the ATI black people like how the Spaniards treated you when you was running around the Philippines with no clothes on. Filipinos should just Stick to being a domestic helper and working in brothels and leave the Ati black people culture alone. give them back there land an go back to Thailand.

    • +S Li nah im pretty sure modern humans didnt show up till about 50,000 years ago.

    • +S Li how old are you seriously?

    • +Konphetty DUMBPHETTY, Oh so sharks has been around for 400 millions years but the ATI people no? Do I sense some prejudice against the ATI people. Ants has been around for 100 million years. But when it comes to the ATI people, some how in your pea brain, it can't be 1 million years. 1 million years is not even a 1/2 second in the Universe, it's less. I think you still have a lot to learn. The Gregorian calendar was just invented 500 years ago. You really believe they know how long the ATI people has been on this earth. 😂😂😂😂😂😂 You Brainwashed fool... what next you gonna tell me. Time has been around for millions of years, even though it was invented by the Egyptians 1500 years ago.😂😂😂😂😂😂 Tomorrow my high school class an teacher will get a laugh out of the Conversation.😂 you got a lot to learn DUMBPHETTY.😐

  • The Ati people being the first inhabitants of the island and the archipelago of the Philippines should get more benefits from the government.

  • That's mangayad I used to live there

  • If they just employ more ati people in Boracay that problem won't exist. They can help with advertetsing the island as well.

    • cerverg But these filthy oligarchs are racist to the core. I'll never go to Boracay for this reason 😡

  • I'm sorry but majority of the people from this country have racist tendencies towards dark skinned people. I've been doing this study for the last 2 yrs in Dubai. I'm not surprised. It's the 21st century for crying out loud! You funny dwarfs!

    • you can say the same about almost any country on Earth, besides predominately white countries. From Korea to India to Africa to Mexico to Dominican Republic, to African-Americans, there is a general preference for lighter skin.

  • in the name of commercialism, the gov't always in favors big businesses over it's people. if i were an ATI tribesmen i will trash the word " proud to be a filipino"

    • grvc44 I'm not even an Ati but I've trashed that word long time ago - and one of these is this prejudice 😡😡

  • Phuket was nice 20 years ago and they should have stopped "development" THEN and kept it that way., Today its a dump with starbucks on every corner and black water full of POO leaking out at the beaches.... Boracay are doing the exact same thing letting "development" get out of hand thinking short term and in 20 eyar nobody will want to go there,,,,how hard is it to understand people go there because of how it is NOW if they wanted over developed dumps they would not go there so why turn it in to just that? IDIOTS

  • It's sad to see that darker skin colour is discriminated with not just Africans, but also other countries which are not white to begin with.

    • Blacks are even descriminated by blacks for example Ethiopian shanqila and somali Bantu.

    • ScholarGnome So you're still justifying this greed? Shame on you if you're Filipino and "proud" of dislocation of these native people.

    • This isn't exactly about race (how blacks are discriminated against since whites and other lighter skinned people are also forcibly displaced), but this is raw capitalism at work here. The land is valuable so it is being developed to become even more valuable. Seeing this as purely acting on racist motives does not account the whole dynamics of the "free" market (which could appear "racist").

  • Racist

  • Fuck you philippines gov.also to dep.of tourism secretary and local gov.unit the most benificiary is the ati tribe the gov. Want taxs the more tax they collect more money will corrupt shame on you to all gov. Leader.
