  • Finally, I was wondering if I would ever use that jar of sand in a video. Thanks to all the Kiwi geograpeeps that helped out with this video. you guys rock. If could Haka for you I would. Sweet as.

  • I'm glad to be mentioned as an honorable New Zealander

  • From a New Zealander, we really appreciate this video man, trust me, whenever we hear our country named anywhere we get all excited because we’re hardly ever mentioned 😂 And as a Maori half cast, I also want to say thank you for putting in the obvious effort to try and pronounce our words correctly, we really do appreciate that, and I apologise for the people who are giving you shit for your pronunciation, they don’t understand that you didn’t grow up with the language and that you’re only just now learning. It all comes with practice. Cheers mate 🤙🏽

    • Fark yeah!!!

    • Agreed. I thought the pronunciation was by far the best I've heard from any non-Kiwi. Well done.

    • YrUdUm what was trash about it? 😂

    • Totally agree, I don't see why some people have to have a go at someone for trying to speak Maori, the dude is American of course he won't be perfect, but hell he's trying and he may even make it more popular to people overseas, I mean I'm learning Russian and when I stuff up a word they don't care, they're just happy someone wants to learn it lol people just need to chill lol

  • I’m Canadian and I agree New Zealand is basically Australia’s Canada. Also we like people from New Zealand 😎

    • bet lmfao i wanna move to canada for the skiing heard its best in world

    • @Hazee my dad flys almost every year from NZ to North America to ski because the skiing here is so shite in comparison 😂

    • Maura Davis-Wall ayy i really wanna go to canada north america and japan for skiing sounds so good

    • Not the first time ive heard this 😂

    • Please, don't put us kiwis in the same sentence with aussies

  • The fact that Australia has a part in the constitution saying New Zealand can join anytime makes it feel like one of those friendships where one party very clearly has romantic feelings and the other just wants to stay friends, but the former remains hopeful that eventually the other will change their mind.

    • Australia is a "hopeless romantic" 🤣🤣🤣

    • and deep down NZ obviously feels the same way but is too indecisive because of Australias troubled past 😂 ... and all the other countries look at both of them like "Just kiss already 🙄"

    • So they’re like Mary and Bert. Or me and my first girlfriend.

    • New Zealand was actually a part of Australia, specifically the colony New South Wales, until 1841.

  • As a Canadian I've always viewed New Zealand as our cultural twin. Big time love ♥️

    • Yep, we’re always getting overshadowed and mocked by our larger neighbours...

    • i always say this ❤️

    • Hey watch the video "10 reasons not to visit New Zealand" by garandhero.

    • Not exactly. The way NZ treats its indigenous populations is light years ahead of Canada. Not to mention that the recent trucker protests have exposed some of Canada's dark and ugly underbelly.

  • "It's okay.... You can win." That's exactly what we say when New Zealand beats India. We respect em players for their humility. 🇮🇳

    • Yeah new Zealand has one of the most humble cricket team

    • Hey watch the video "10 reasons not to visit New Zealand" by garandhero.

    • Cricket isn't popular with all kiwis rugby and rugby league is our sport mma, boxing, basketball were good at real sports 👊

    • @一道霞光 hiii where are you from

    • @Secret M4A1 Rifle I from nz

  • I'm frustrated that you pronounced 'Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu' perfectly, but nobody nailed the word 'Maori' once.

    • That's because no one cares

    • He didn't pronounce it perfectly

    • @Mikaere Tibble and?

    • @Purefoldnz you seem quite adamant on people not caring about pronunciation even though its a big part of Maori culture, especially with them only making 15% of the country

    • @Mikaere Tibble You are talking about semantics. PC nonsense.

  • I’m a baby boomer and some people in the past 30 years started thinking computers and technology would make young people zombies who just played computer games. But you make learning new things so interesting. I think your channel is an example of what education will be like in the future 😃

  • I’ve been to New Zealand as an exchange student, an amazing experience, it’s such a wonderful and magical country! Love from France 🇫🇷❤️

  • As an Irishman I lived here for 7 years. Loved it. Before I moved I liked rugby and outdoors, afterwards I became obsessed.

    • I'm an Irishman addicted to rugby That test series wins over the All of the Blacks was mad Nearly tore my voice box in half

  • 9:55 I am an Aussie and the Kiwi dialect sounds nothing like ours. It is completely different. It’s one of the things us Aussies take the mick out of them for. Their pronunciation for six as “sux” always and fish and chips as “fush and chups” is always a source of great humour. However as an Aussie I love New Zealand to bits as they are just an amazing country with very few, if any, bad things about them.

    • Genevieve Blackburn I’ve never heard anyone in NZ say fush and chips 🤣

    • those are exaggerated kiwi stereotypes. never heard anyone pronounce "six" as "sux"

    • But to American's it's similar. It would be like us saying Canadian English and American sound the same

    • And Europeans voted Kiwis as the most understandable and likable English speakers. As an Australian, I am surprised to hear there were Kiwis in PNG during WWII they would have been airmen and sailors I think. I am aware that a Fijian regiment served in the NZL army and fought the Japanese later in the war. They defended NZL while the Kiwis were in the Middle East. Many Americans were also in NZL but killed more of their own than Japanese when sent to battle. The USAF continues the tradition by bombing allies around the world and has killed more Kiwis since the Vietnam War than the enemy. Americans in Melbourne engaged in terrible race-based battles every Friday night which are still talked about today.

  • I miss this place so much. I’m Korean but I spent 18 months of my formative years in Christchurch. It’s not long but there are a handful of lasting crystal clear memories that I cherish. Most of my earliest memories are from my time there. I miss the blue skies, the Real minced meat pies (I later learned the rest of the world except Australia were calling dried fruit pies that. Disappointing as raisons in a cookie), animals everywhere, paua necklaces, the beach and the whales and seals, and just letting the wind move my body. It’s an idealised image through the eyes of a child, but still.

  • The closest he came to pronouncing maori right was when hes said it wasn't pronounced like that

  • As a turk, i'm so proud of this country. nice and kind people... good environment..... go on kiwis, we support you.

    • There is a memorial in Wellington with the most beautiful words from Kemal Ataturk to the families of young men who died at Gallipoli. It shows a great generosity of spirit.

  • Love New Zealand, wonderful country I hope one day I'll visit, greetings from Peru 🇵🇪🇳🇿🇵🇪🇳🇿🇵🇪🇳🇿

  • The pronunciation on the Maori words was just a little off in this, better than most though. But yeah you smashed the actual geography as expected.

    • He kept saying morrrrrri lol

    • I thought he did a good job and I speak te reo Maori.

    • Ÿamada True lmao

    • @Noa Tereu I thought he did too.

    • He did good. Way better than people from NZ

  • My immense love for New Zealand from India 🇮🇳🤝🇳🇿❤️

  • "New Zealand is Australia's Canada" me: LAUGHING UNCONTROLABLY also me: it is trudeau

    • fclp67 LMAO underrated comment 😂😂😂

    • Sooooo truuuuuuuuuu do

    • NZ isn't Australia's Canada Nz aint even Australia's, nor is it the commonwealths or British empire nor the Vatican's. Aokealoa (nz) belongs to Indigenous Aokealoa Kānaka Maoli who settled Aokealoa 1200 years ago.

    • @Aokealoa Maoli Its part if the commonwealth just like Australia is, get over it.

  • Would love to visit beautiful New Zealand . Here in Crete , Greece we have nothing but the utmost respect for the brave kiwis who fought alongside us here in WW2 .

    • I'm a kiwi and I've always wanted to visit Crete for the same kind of reason! ❤️

  • Kia ora from a Maori in New Zealand. You did an awesome job of explaining our beautiful country. Love that you made mention of Zealandia also. Nga mihi nui.

  • I'm from Chileand I have the fortune of having my school exchange here in New Zealand, I was supposed to stay for just 6 months but due to covid I ended up staying the whole year, and I couldn't be any more happy about it. I'm having so much fun, it's truly a great and beautiful country!!

  • As I Kiwi, I actually learned something from this video. It's not perfect, but you won't get that in 17mins. Really enjoyed it. Well done.

  • "queen's land" It's name queen's town not queen's land. Queen's land is in Australia

    • Eye roll of the century for both New Zealanders and Aussies. Would have said "Kiwis" but you Mourie bros sometimes cringe at that when we talk about all New Zealand Peeps..

    • @Matthew Jacobson It's Maori*

    • Yep, being from New Zealand I noticed that aswell and it really annoyed me

    • @Shawn Buchanan He was imitating how they were pronouncing it.

    • hard

  • Ah yes, we always remember our role in WW1 as the part we played in Samoa, and totally not the whole Galipolli campaign, which we have a national holiday for.

    • Noticed that too

    • Yep, I was waiting for a ANZAC mention

    • The one part they screwed up. Samoa? Really? Gallipoli is considered NZs birth as a nation as opposed to being a colony, besides that our men played major parts in the 2nd Battle of the Somme and Passchendaele as well.

    • Also the North Africa campaign in WW2 all the way through Italy and Greece aswell.

    • yea but i allways take these vids with a hint of salt they cant mention everything but they should've mentioned it somewhere as a holiday with date

  • The way she said KUMARA had me dying with laughter

    • nah that was ok.. hangi was way funnier but to be fair someone probably didnt tell her the correct pronunciation and she read it the way she thought it was pronounced!

    • OMG SAME

    • Hehe funy number laugh now

    • I'am sure a merry cans call it BUN GEE as well ? as in Han gee

  • I visited the most beautiful country of New Zealand, after 59 years of longing to go. Traveled the north and south island and did things that are not even mentioned in this video. It was everything and more. If only people around the world were as friendly as the Kiwi's. We were visiting family just outside Christchurch when the Murders took place everyone shocked and saddened. I love you New Zealand wish you were not half way around the world. X

  • Every time you mispronounced "Maori", I cried. Legitmately cried out loud (and winced with some other pronunciations), causing my housemates to ask me if I was feeling okay. But other than that, this was a great synopsis of my homeland and I love your work overall. And thank you especially for pointing out the supervolcano, as I often have trouble getting people to believe me when I tell them about it.

  • I love listening to other countries talk about my Beautiful country! 😍🥝🐑🇳🇿

  • As a proud New Zealander and Tokelauan it was honestly good to see my little island paradise of Tokelau on this kind of platform big ups to you guys!

  • You have no idea how proud and grateful i am that you added the Te Reo versions of the name places. Thanks so much man. Nga Mihi!

  • As a Maori this makes me so proud. Thank you❤️

  • I (a kiwi) watched these videos when they were just starting with my class when I was 11 and seeing them get to New Zealand after a few years was pretty heartwarming for me

  • Big love Croatia! I hope I will visit this beautiful country once in my life! ♥

  • Love to New Zealand from Australia! ❤️🇳🇿🇦🇺

  • Thank you for this, I'm a kiwi and I thought that this was really well done and really showcased the awesome stuff about NZ. The pronunciation wasn't perfect, but obviously they did their research and said most things correctly. You can't really expected anyone to pronounce another language perfectly if they haven't lived there and been taught it as us kiwis have. Once again awesomely done and a huge thanks from New Zealand.

  • Personally as a New Zealander, I reckon you guys did better than most at not butchering our place names *for the most part*, a couple of things to point out would be that we call the North Island and South Island literally "The North Island" or "The South Island", also the big mountain chain of the North Island that goes from Wellington to Gisborne is called the Axial Ranges, Kaweka is one part of it. Imo there were probably a few cooler things to mention in the attractions like Coromandel or the longest place name from the start of the video, as well as all the comments I've seen about Taika Waititi. Overall great job of explaining our history and culture, one thing I noticed was missing was NZ's efforts in galipolli during WW1, which is kind of a big deal over here every ANZAC day. Chur Geography Now, I'm impressed!

    • Max Smith I reckon closing the ceremonies this year undermines the attacks 'not changing who we are,' but whatever hopefully nothing will be cancelled again next year

    • Yeah I was surprised that Galipolli wasn't mentioned, its kinda a big deal

    • if u ever go to Coromandel (im from there) please NEVER NevER gO To KEnEDy bAY. (iM aLSo FrOm thERE.)

    • @Niki 641 nah g Kennedy bay's mean, the summer there was pretty awesome a few years back

    • @Moehau Man I think you spoke too soon

  • I was amazed when he pretty accurately and confidently pronounced "Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateapokaiwhenuakitanatahu" despite sounding in his normal speech like someone from North America.

  • I've lived in New Zealand my whole life and even speak Te Reo Maori to a certain extent and that beginning was amazing! How long did you practice for?

  • Wow! You brought a tear to my eye and made me prouder to be a kiwi 😊 thank you for your honest review of New Zealand 🇳🇿

  • Māori - Pronounced “Mah-oree” Emphasis on the vowel “ā”, flow the two vowels “āo” together (should sound similar to the word “our” or “ow”) and roll the tongue on the letter “r” flowing into the vowel “I” (which sounds like the English letter E)

    • I've heard my Maori friends while i was studying in Auckland pronounce it as MAAo-REE.

    • Anthony Ngu because they’re colonised

    • @Rachael Gia eh? What you on about. The Pākehā don't say Maori like that, and i live in Otara South Auckland.

    • Anthony Ngu that’s cool, I am MAAo-REE

    • As a Māori ive never heard ANYONE pronounce it as Mah-oree. Māo is one syllable. Youve seperated into two. Its MAAO-REE with a rolled R.

  • As an Aussie we love to have a go at the Kiwis but that's only because we love them as brothers and sisters.

  • you forgot to mention New Zealands further involvement in WW1, specifically Gallipoli, wich had a huge impact on Australian and New Zealandian national identity

    • Yeah that was such an odd way to describe our involvement in the World Wars. Made it seem like we were barely involved, when we had one of the highest casualty rates, and one of the main leaders in the Battle of Britain was a Kiwi

    • AND THE LEGENDARY BOB SEMPLE TANK IN WW2!

    • @Logan yeah, that thing too, the greatest tank in history, according to some mid western youtube dude....

    • @boreas real potential history?

    • @John Smith yep

  • Amo muito esse país. Quero morar lá algum dia

  • As a kiwi, this video is awesome. Should be played on Air New Zealand flights for international visitors. Good work guy's.

    • It'd be better than that very average rap video they did. Bring back the body painting I say.

  • Super amazed with how much correct content you have. So happy with your pronounciation of our Māori language. This is prob the best info on our country that Ive ever watched, great efforts guys! Thank you 😊

  • Wow, learnt stuff about sovereignness. Love living in NZ. You did amazingly with all the Māori names...except for the actual name Māori and Taranaki and hangi.

    • And Rotorua, Taupo were both mispronounced

    • @Meow He still pronounced Taupo better than most kiwis.

  • i live here and you did surprisingly well with maori pronunciation. most people really mess it up.

  • Barbs, I think this is one of the best episodes you have ever done. All the jokes felt fresh, visuals are even better than normal, nothing dragged, and it generally felt like you had a blast making this episode. -Cheers from Michigan

    • Adam Blugerman I’m from Michigan too

    • And he mentioned dolan dark in the famous people section, this automatically makes it the best

    • Michiganders unite! IDK I am from Michigan as well

    • Same, love Michigan. Geography now states when he's done w the countries? 🕵️

  • Your pronunciation of our Maori names are on point and better than most Europeans who were born here in Aotearoa. I appreciate your work. Thank you for spreading this information.

  • Loved this video! Had the pleasure of living in NZ for six months beautiful country and great people.

  • Justice for this video! You can’t ignore bad things that happened! And he said it in the most euphemistic way possible. Re-monetize this video!

  • I'm impressed with your Maori pronunciation! This is the first time I've seen somebody that's not from our country that pronounces things right for once!

    • He didn't, are you a kiwi or not. He butchered it

  • Don't know why this was in my recommended, I am from NZ born and raised. For those wondering, this video is very accurate and has nearly no mistakes. The only bad part was the pronunciation of many words, it was to be expected though. Great video, I thought I was going to be facepalming and cringing at how bad it was but it is done very well.

  • I’ve been waiting years for this episode, and I wasn’t disappointed. Thanks Barbs, all the way from NZ.

  • This was great and surprisingly very accurate well done this is probably the best video I've seen covering Aotearoa !! I know some people find his word "Maori" pronounciation weird but hes actually closer to it than most foreigners say it, you can tell he practiced and tried to say it as best he could. It's actually very close we are just used to the regular pronunciation from hearing it our whole lives. He still says it better than half the country. All the other words were pretty accurate love this thank you!

  • that was really well researched, and our language and place names were super-surprisingly well pronunciated! Best foreign pronunciation i've ever heard :) well done :)

  • I'm Kiwi and admire, respect, and appreciate all the effort, research, and hard work that was put into this video. On behalf of us, Kiwis, Kia Ora 🥰.

    • Hey watch the video "10 reasons not to visit New Zealand" by garandhero

  • Hey! This was an awesome video of our country!, Thank you! I honestly learnt some stuff about my country that I never knew, keep up the good work and take my sub!

  • I love how you mastered the Maori one word in the beginning... 👌 And thanks for mentioning Tokelau Islands

  • on behalf of all of us from new zealand, thank you for making this video. it's pretty nice to see you guys making a video about us i even learned a few new things about my country that i didn't know prior. thank you

    • I'm also a kiwi and I approve this message

    • Good pronunciation for the most part, I absolutely love how the only real mispronunciations are of English names

    • @Biponacci i made my thank you comment sound a little fancy so i toned it down a bit and did some minor edits

  • I absolutely love this you done a great job on my country!!!

  • What a great youtube channel!! You guys are awesome!

  • As Māori, I really appreciate how accurate this was and even the level of effort to pronounce Māori words and names are so much better than most people here

  • Hey I stumbled upon this vid in my home page and as a kiwi myself found this to be very accurate and surprisingly full of quick and easy to digest info. Well done wonderful video. I'll be checking out more for sure.

  • I'm Australian and at some point I was taught the New Zealand anthem, our country really loves you kiwis!

  • As a Maori I am impressed with your pronouncements!!!

    • Keitoawesome 21 bag??!:&:&:

    • Although they were mostly off it's impressive the effort they actually put into it.

  • Thank you for trying so hard to incorporate our young and difficult culture. Glad to be flag bearers for indigenous respect. Being a proud Kiwi this was fun. I like to think we lead the way in inclusiveness. People rock... Lets celebrate that

  • That's, without doubt, the best pronunciation of Maori I've ever heard from an American.

  • I've probaly learned more about geography from this channel than all my years in school

  • I love how Hannah mispronounced every Maori word it couldn't have been more perfect

  • Don't forget native New Zealand metal band "Alien Weaponry" They mostly sing their lyrics in Te Reo Maori and have world wide praise. (From a fan living in Ireland)

  • Great video. A few hiccups but hundy percent little mistakes. NZ is a complicated country. Proud to be a part of it. Tu Meke!

  • New Zealand is so fascinating just as fascinating as AustraliaI would love to go to either one but I would really love to go to both !!!😄😃

    • Come on over. It's a great time. Expensive as heck, but worth it.

  • So impressed by your pronunciation of the Maori words. First time I’ve heard a non-new Zealand pronounce Maori correctly

  • If I wasn’t American, I’d totally live in New Zealand. Love you guys and wish you nothing but happiness and prosperity. Cheers guys! 🇺🇸🤝🇳🇿

  • Great video. I spent two weeks in New Zealand this past March. With out a doubt, the most beautiful place I've ever been. Particularly the south island. Beats on a delicious burger, not so much! Of course they felt the same way about replacing it with a tomato!

  • What a great video, I got very curious about New Zealand when it was being mentioned in a video of Austrnasian history. ♡Philippines ...

    • Hey watch the video "10 reasons not to visit New Zealand" by garandhero..

  • I really like that the Kiwis of European heritage adapt the indigenous culture. Not something you see very often around the world

    • It's because of our history with the Maori and the Maori's lack of clinging to the past and using that against the whitefolk of New Zealand.

    • yes but no

    • Not really, if you think some dancing is what culture is then read some more. Europeans still brought civilization to them, a written language, values, arquitecture, etc, just like everywhere else

    • Kj_mast_er our culture is what you see around you, you're just passing by

    • Kj_mast_er more like when you learn how to write and read.

  • You know it's love when all you want is that person to be happy, even if you're not part of their happiness.

  • As a Kiwi I really enjoyed this and it was honestly pretty accurate! Also one of the only videos that didn't make a 'fush and chups' joke so thank you :)

  • You deserve huge props for the epic pronunciation of our longest town name. Thanks from a native Maori of Aotearoa ❤️

    • Jose Moran Accurate. My Tupuna (ancestors) were intrigued by the light haired fair skinned Pakeha (White) people who came on huge ships to New Zealand to colonise my people. Consequently, my heritage is of mixed race. I am "somewhat white" because of the inter-racial relations of my ancestors.

  • Watching this because I just got back from 2 months in NZ. One of my favourite places I've ever been ❤️ I'd love to live there!

  • Just for clarity, Aotearoa is technically only a name for the north island, meaning "Land of the Long White Cloud", while Te Waipounamu means "The Water's of Greenstone", and Stewart Island is Rakiura, meaning "Glowing Skies". If you're going by Maui references, then the north island is Te Ika o Maui ("The Fish of Maui"), and the south island is Te Waka o Maui ("The Boat of Maui"). Stewart Island also then becomes Te Punga o Te Waka o Maui ("The Anchor of the Boat of Maui"). Also, most people just call the national museum Te Papa. I love that you mentioned that we have a Minister of the Rings, but disappointed that you missed out that we have a National Wizard. There are actually several dialects of Maori, with the most widespoken being Te Reo. Maori Tatau are always a form of Moko, Kirituhi is what non-Maori get. The distinction is to do with genealogical tracing vs just culturally inspired patterns. Oh, and the housing crisis isn't just China's fault, there's a lot wrong with NZ's regulations and tax laws around housing, Foreign ownership was recently banned and the market is still out of control.

  • I'm from nz and I love that you nailed the worlds longest maori name. 🤟🤟🤟

  • I love kiwi birds they are so cute! Love from Mexico 🇲🇽🇳🇿

  • As a kiwi the way you personify the country makes my heart melt

  • Love New Zealand great friendly people love from Australia 🇦🇺🇳🇿

  • As a New Zealander I highly appreciate that he took the time to learn to say the Māori words right

    • But he didn't. He munted alot of it.

  • I live in poland i'm having a english contest there are 3 parts of it and i am on the 2nd part (semi-finals) which is about new zealands geography, culture, history, traditions and so on so when i found this video i thought it would help me with geography but it helped cover a lot more topics! Thank you so much for your help and i hope that thanks to this i can get to the finals :D

    • Hey watch the video "10 reasons not to visit New Zealand" by garandhero.

  • New Zealand is the best country I’ve been to. Has everything

  • I'm Maori, American and Samoan and i'm proud to be from New Zealand

  • I can't believe I'm learning so much about my Own country from a CS-tv video that I didn't even know 😂 I'm glad our country is being mentioned

  • This guy’s better at pronouncing Maori words than some reporters here in nz😂

  • Really glad our country got mentioned. I'm glad to be a New Zealander.

  • Fun fact: The New Zealand Air Force emblem has a kiwi bird on it. Think about that, a flightless bird on the air force emblem

    • Who said kiwis couldnt fly, huh?

    • @sicpup I hope this is sarcasm.

    • Australia puts a kangaroo in their roundel. Britain’s looks just like a target! No matter.

    • And the RCAF uses a maple leaf for their roundel.

  • Minor point: It's "Chat-Ham" Islands, you pronounce the "T" and "H" separately. And we typically drop the H altogether, more like "Chatam"

  • Enjoyed the look at our little place. As I understand it, in both world wars we fought mostly in europe alongside other allies. We were very close to England back then, as part of the Empire.

  • Great video. Your pronunciation of Maori words is fantastic.

  • NZ and Australia share different geology like Scotland, and Switzerland, Australia never moves and is the oldest landmass, New Zealand is always moving with constant earthquakes and is the newest/youngest landmass. NZ is on the border with the Indo-Australian and Pacific plate which makes it mountainous.
