I am from North india, but I was always fascinated by the history of South indian kings. Trying to fit an epic 2400 pages history novel into two parts is mind blowing. Hats off to Maniratnam sir. I still think it would’ve been better if it was made as Web series with 8 - 10 episodes. This way, full novel would’ve been given to the audience today, tomorrow and many years to come.

I sincerely loved PS-1. It was quite loyal to the plot of the first two books. Unfortunately, those who didn't read the books couldn't understand it. But even then, I had serious doubts on whether it was possible for the other three books to be filmed in a single movie. Besides, Mani Ratnam is essentially a copycat director from the 80s era who copies a lot from Balachander, Bharathiraja, Balu Mahendra, etc. (those who haven't watched the films of Mani Ratnam's predecessors won't believe me). And my suspicions were confirmed - PS-2 is indeed a butchered version of Books 3, 4 and 5 (if you haven't found the time to read those last three books, you're lucky - you won't notice the missing portions in the film). Anyhow, the two films are essentially loyal to the basic storyline of the five books. The biggest disappointment in the film is the complete absence of Manimekalai - a casuality of decades of colourism in the Indian film industry (Manimekalai is a dark-complexioned lady in the book and is one of Vandhiyathevan's suitors - she could've been played by Priyamani or Aishwarya Rajesh). AR Rahman fans too would be disappointed to notice that full songs weren't used in the film. Earlier, Bharathiraja was controversial for that practice and now Mani Ratnam, just like a typical copycat, is continuing this practice. The final battle scene is strikingly similar to the battle scene in _Parthiban Kanavu_ (1960), a film based on another Kalki Krishnamurthy novel. But seriously, that's the best part of PS-2. Waiting for your opinions on my review...

Ponniyin Selvan:- When recreating a history as a movie, the role of the director is challenging- not only in delivering the story at it's original form; but also retaining the interest of the audience. Bringing all the movie giants under one roof and offering such an exceptional spread to the audience; is definitely a humongous task. Director Mani Ratnam has pulled it off quite charmingly. Sincere respect and love to Mani Ratnam for giving us so many memories to cherish from the chola - pandya dynasty and giving us a face to relate to each of those characters. All the actors have been carefully hand picked by the director. They have done justice to their roles - some have more screen time in part 1 and others in part 2. All the emotions have been beautifully edged by ARR. The chemistry between Aditya Karikaalan and Nandini have been so wonderfully brought out through the song - "veera". Kudos to ARR for being such a backbone of this mega epic film. Much grateful to the entire crew of PS for giving us a movie of this century. Thank you Renjini ❤❤😊😊

This movie is opening tomorrow (28 April) in Auckland NZ, which is how I ended up watching this trailer. It looks really impressive, but I know nothing about the back story: so is it based on a novel? Historical background or fiction? and is the novel a 7-volume epic? I'm leaning toward watching it, but feel like I'm going to be way out of my depth!😅
@Rex Harrison It is a 5 volume novel, but filmed in 2 films. The first film covers the first two books, and the 2nd, the other three. _Ponniyin Selvan_ is a history-based fiction, but with more emphasis on fact, just like Hilary Mantel's _Wolf Hall_ trilogy.

The BGM is awesome. It uplifts the wonderful interpretation of the story.
The performances and the characters are just growing in intensity, the story seems to have so many more twists and turns than the first one (I have not read the books), the cinematography, production design, colour palette, and the score.. just off the charts looks spectacular. PS1 was absolutely brilliant in what it had to setup. Now eagerly waiting for a perfect sequel. Politics, drama, action and emotions, just an epic chartbuster loading.. fantastic trailer and of course hyped!!
