Who’s ready for an incredible Audi drag race… On SNOW!
We’ve got Mat in the Audi RS e-tron GT, and he’s going head to head against an Audi RS3 and Audi RS6! The thing is, none of these cars are equipped with winter tyres. They’re about to face off in normal summer tyres to see which can handle wintery conditions the best!
So how do they compare? Well starting with the RS e-tron, it’s packing two electric motors which can put down 646hp and 830Nm of torque. It’s pretty heavy, though, weighing in at 2,345kg.
Then we have the RS3. It’s housing the infamous 2.5-litre 5-cylinder turbo under the bonnet which is good for 400hp and 500Nm. It’s a whole lot lighter than the e-tron, tipping the scales at 1,570kg.
Then finally we have the gorgeous RS6. With a 4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine, this performance estate can produce 600hp and 800Nm. But of course, given the size, it’s pretty heavy, weighing in at 2,075kg.

Have to say the e-tron was absolutely controlled over any inclines But we do have to keep in mind that the tyres have to be the same In such steep and low grip situations, there is a HUGE diffrence between good tyres and amazing tyres

@SomeGuy I live in Finland.. Yesterday morning -18ºC., warmer today. 30-40 cm of snow in this part of the country. We have 3 categories for winter tyres: those designed for central Europe (like Alpin) , Nordic and studded.
@Markku Vuori depends on your kind of winter, my guy :) We don't have much if any icd on the road. Some snow, and like -10° at the coldest In these situations where it's mainly just wet, a friggin all season performs better
@SomeGuy Michelin Alpin is not proper winter tyre. It is ok when roads are wet, not icy .

This video was probably made for fun, but it is actually extremely interesting and useful... it would be amazing if you start using it as benchmark for future reviews to see how different 4WD systems work! In this case, however, you should tell us which tyres are mounted. E.g.: - Touareg v Q8 v Cayenne (sort of "VW snow showdown") - Defender v Wrangler v Jimny - Q5 v GLC v X3 - Range Rover v Bentayga v Cullinan

Having owned a 4wd with twin electric motors, electric is indeed very good at getting you moving and the weight helps. But the catch is stopping where the weight is against you. This video should have done a brake test going down the hill and applied halfway. I suspect the EV would have stopped somewhere in the Cafe.
@Simon Henry E tron doesn't engine brake much at all unless you hit the wheel paddles, it just gives a slight regen or slight acceleration by standard to coast at a fairly constant rate no matter if it's a slight decline or incline. As someone who lives in a place that gets LOTS of snow and shitty weather it feels very well thought out for winter conditions but at the end of the day a 2500kg SUV is still sketchy when you break traction particularly in a downhill on sleet.
Think people forget evs have engine breakingas soon as you touchthe break, and combined with tra tion control its Effectivly a much faster reacting Abs before abs kicks in.
Very valid point that often gets overlooked especially by two tonne 4x4 drivers that sit on people's back bumper in the snow showing off.
So you're just saying regardless of powertrain, the heaviest vehicle will always take the longest to stop?
Having instant delivery of power to whichever area needs it definitely helps as well.
Well colour me extremely impressed by the RS e-tron! Would love to see it up against something with a bit more off-road chops like a Range Rover and maybe an older Impreza as well for shits and giggles
RS E-Tron on Snow Tires seemingly slower.
Saw my first Audi RS E-tron GT yesterday and was shocked how wide and cool looking they are in person! The RS6 still takes the cake though because it has that cake.

That RS e-tron was amazing. I think indeed the ability for slip management systems to control motor output so quickly and immediately does give it a huge advantage over mechanical systems. The older systems cannot apply/lift/apply/lift power as quickly or in as small increments.
Wow, wonderful demonstration of something I was pretty sure would have this outcome, but it's just so much better when you can see it in action. Mighty impressive for sure!

Both the EVs I've owned have phenomenal traction control. It's just able to react quicker.

You know why they're called "all season"? Because they are CRAP in ALL SEASONS! Get proper winter tires, and proper summer tires.
I can tell you that all season tires are dangerous and useless garbage compared to real winter tires, studded or friction.

Found out one thing this week. Regen braking is brill in snow. Hardly have to touch breaks

i would love to see the e-tron climbing up the "hill" after the rs6 spinned, and formed a small ice layer, wich drops the grip exactly where you need it :)
Wow - love this. If I had to pick I’d go for the RS3 even though it was the worst performing. I just love that car. Especially in that jazzy green colour!

Snow was compacted by the much heavier cars which made it harder for the little rs3 at the end, bet if the cars started the other way around it would’ve been a different result

We should maybe not forget, that the conditions for the RS3 were the hardest after two over 2 ton cars compressed the surface and made it even more slippery! But other than that, nice test. You should have tried reverse gear as well. For the fun.

You know the old joke from wrecker about Audis in winter snow/ice? All the cars in the ditches are Audis. On the other hand, that joke is more a testament to the overconfident owners, than it is about the cars. Of course that joke was coined long before traction and stability control was a thing.

I know it's subjective but our ears are clearly different. It sounded like a cheap and nasty, raspy, popping, banging PoS to me. Just like all these modern fake afterfire shitboxes. :)

@Jason Yokoyama it uses the brakes to slow spinning wheels and forcing toque to the wheels on the ground. In the car wow test the ESP systems were all off. In that ski slope with ESP off, a Subaru will spin its front left and rear right and go nowhere.

@Thorstein Klingenberg maybe different years had different systems, but at least when I had a 2004 (US spec) STI, when the center diff was locked, it was hard to park because the tires would skip because everything was locked.

The progress is more due to the winter tires than the all wheel drive train systems.
They are most likely using the same tyres on all of em, else that would be dumb af

I really like this test I mean, I'm not an Audi guy but I do want to get a 1st gen R32 golf for Alaska driving, and this video showed me the difference between Quattro and a typical halidex all wheel drive system
First gen haldex was even more fwd biased that this drift spec haldex in the rs3

Great video, but please next time show for each car what tyre you're using, because that's what makes the biggest difference in reality. I passed so many 4x4 SUVs stuck in the snow with cheap 4seasons with my front wheel drive Swift Sport only because I've fitted it with Pirelli Sottozero wich are tremendous tyres in the snow. So even if the fact that an electric car can send power to each wheel more precisely is a good explanation for the etron GT winning, I can't help but doubting that the challenge could be affected by it having better tyres.

I have a 2019 RS3 which was terrible last year in the snow. I replaced my winter tires this season however we haven't had any snow yet. I'm looking forward to my first drive in the snow.

Defo need a thorough, and i mean thorough, Xdrive v 4matic v Quattro v Haldex in the higher end models (M's, 63's, RS and R's) comp please :D
theres cars out there with Xdrive 4matic and quattro badges and they all use haldex systems. Only some more powerfull and sporty models like the rs6 in this video use a more rwd based system. What i mean is that these days Quattro is just a badge. Yeah audi will perform better most of the time in snow but there is no such thing as a quattro system its just a badge for all awd audis

I'll concede that I'm blown away by what the E-tron achieved there. Who's have thought an electric vehicle is actually better suited to a ski slope than a school run or trip to the supermarket!
Not really surprised to be honest. The extra thousand pounds in weight help tremendously from a dead stop on packed snow. There is a reason why snow plows will add weight when plowing snow.
It just super heavy so a lot more grip, easy as that, put 200 kg in any of other cars and they would have increased grip
So impressed with the RS E-Tron GT, my neighbour has exactly the same on in the same colour

RS6 had 22 inch low profile tires but the etron GT had 20 or 21 inch tires. That makes a difference espeically starting from the corner.
