The mechanic who bought this BMW M5 Competiton before me decided not to fix it after finding structural damage to the strut tower. I then bought it from him and attempted to fix it myself. In the previous video i replaced the strut tower despite BMW not being able to give us any help or advise on how to do it. But now that its replace theres even more damage to repair & there's one issue which arrises with the 2019 M5 which wasn't there when i bought it.

The only downside about mats videos. They are just not long enough could watch this guy all day 🔥🔥🔥
Real
You need the flux capacitor connected to the lube connected that to the schleem that then actives the plumbus , brakes functioning 🧞
we need hour long episodes
He's so much entertaining and not fake
Agreed
Hey Mat, I have some experience working on BMWs and would like to help you diagnose, here are some ideas to start: - The amount of points you bled the brake system from; how many? Though I'm unsure of F90s specifically, from what I've seen on an F10 M5, you need to bleed each corner from two seperate holes: one to bleed the inside pistons, one for the outside pistons. - Try compressing each piston fully while bleeding it, this should help get trapped air out. - Some specs of the newer BMWs lock out the gear lever if the driver door is open, sometimes even if just the seatbelt is off. Due to the airbag system and the restraint system being tightly connected, I suspect there's a slim chance airbag errors could lock you out if it's one of the cars that check if the seatbelt is off. It's unlikely but certainly a possibility i guess - Pump the brake pedal during ABS bleeding - I can hook you up with a very recent & clean version of ISTA if you want to try the ABS bleeding procedure with that. cheers
Your dad is an absolute legend, I laughed it loud when he told you the brakes still didn't work. We need more of matts dad.
This M5 series is golden, Congrats on 1 million. Looking forward to the next episode already!!
I’m with you dude 😎
This guy has a positive attitude... although things are going as hell.. he is still happy and not giving up. this guy will go far in his career.
Mat's face when he started the car was like a 6yr old seeing their presents at Christmas. Doing what you love, with your Dad, girlfriend and your mates and getting paid for it. Yes Mat, you did make the right choice, boy from Leicester done good. Congrats on the 1M subs and don't ever lose your enthusiasm, its so infectious!
I think you should give this one to your dad when your finished. He deserves it for all his hard work.
I really hope he does, would love to know what his Dads dream car is
@TOUKOI’m a Dad & it’s my dream car 😅
@gbormann71 no worries at all fella. 😂 I’m enjoying all the content which is the main thing! 👍
@catchagoogoo1 No, no, you're right! I'm the idiot 🤣 The problem was 'changing gear' to put it in Neutral and for that it needed to be able to sense braking.
You’ve come an unbelievably long way, I remember your early videos. You should be really proud of yourself and what you’ve achieved. 1 million subs is no joke!!
When will the part 4 appear? I am very very anxious to see what you have done!!!
We do this bleeding procedure in work with vans, you have to connect a pressure bleeder to the brake fluid reservoir with atleast 1.5 bar of pressure, and bleed each corner with the computer while someone pumps the pedal, you need someone to pump it to help physically push the fluid out of the abs pump as it activates the solenoid valves internally, hope this helps matt 👌
Your dads smile while works with you is priceless. Way to go Mat hope good things come your way always!
Man seeing your emotions at 14:20 is what it's all about. You're such an awesome dude that's always so down to earth and hard working. You deserve all the success you have and more man! Really really enjoy watching your content and they're all amazing and congratulations on your 1M subs!!
I was wondering if you let left the lever underneath engaged to put it in neutral on the bell housing. You probably checked, but just a thought. Looking forward to the rest of the video.
You would get a gear selection warning if that was the case and the neutral light would blink
This was what I said when he couldn’t shift it in gear. Cuz he switch it to neutral underneath in one of his earlier videos .
@Mat Armstrong it might still be stuck, give it a good tug
Try programming it in the neutral position
@Mat Armstrong ''Remembered'' to pull them off 🤣
Its been awesome following your journey. You are a living inspiration and proof that anything is possible if you believe in yourself. Quick question though, Uhm.... Is there a part 4 video? Id really love to see how this beast turned out.
What can I say Mat. Everything is spot on. Great video, great attitude and great personality. I am sure your dad has to do a lot with it. Thank you mate, and shoutout to your dad. Cheers.
Congratulations Mat on achieving 1 million subscribers! You truly deserve it! I'm seeing a 950hp M5 in the distance future. Fit LCI taillights as well. It was well worth seeing you progressing on from chilling at Indoor BMX park to rebuilding monstrous cars. Keep it up ;)
I love your hard work and pure optimism on every build. Keep going Mat
Smacking the maltesers away, getting your mrs to check the headlights are working, smiling and staying positive through every issue - absolutely love your channel and videos. Cant wait to see this project finished.
I’m a mechanic myself, not worked on BMW but other brands. The new systems require specifics. My advise is to get a pressure bleeder from Amazon/eBay, about £50. It will come with the correct attachment and you can pressurise it to about 1.5 bar, probably what it needs. Give you a bit of insight, the two larger pipes going into the abs module are the main feed pipes from the reservoir feeding for the brakes to have enough liquid. You could also try with the pressure bleeder and without it, 3 people needed, use your Autel system to bleed the brakes, have someone in the car to pump the pedal when the nipple on each corner is open, stop when closed, other person topping up the reservoir and the other opening and closing the nipple on the calliper, many ways of trying, it’s possible that the abs module needs the additional pressure and movement to get what could be micro bubbles out. Also I’d try not to reuse brake fluid after it’s been pushed out, it could contain the micro air bubbles and you’ll keep hitting a wall whenever you try to see if you have a pedal or not. Hopefully I haven’t rambled on too much and you read this. Appreciate I’m a random fan😅 Happy to answer any other questions if you want All the best
If none of the posted procedures work, connect a manual vacuum pump onto the brakefluid reservoir and push back the beakpads with a screwdriver. So you might get most of the air out, backwards.
@Human2Ai2030 have a like for me for having a MK1 Golf GTI!
@Human2Ai2030 😂 well, it is irritating and annoying as hell, even with the perfect original equippment. personally i'm not even fond of normal brake fluid change because it's the dullest, most boring and sometimes dirtiest job imaginable...
@Simon 1998 My thoughts exactly ! You read my mind 😉 Master technicians job , above my pay grade ,, I do disc's & pads ..
@Human2Ai2030 that does not work with cars who have a sophisticated ABS/ESC system (like BMW's DSC) since there are ruffly 6-20 valves inside the hydraulic valve block and in no case are all of them open and pressurized at the same time. that's why you need software to engage the unit electricly. so my guess is that the air is stuck somewhere in or at least near the DSC unit, not in one of the lines above.
Be careful as the OPFs are located in the link pipe of the exhaust system and not in downpipes on M5 F90. If you intend to replace the downpipe only, you will loose the pressure connection and keep the filters, which may cause some damage.
Great episode! Congrats on 1m subscribers & I'm impressed how with the chassis repair how the engine & suspension all lined up. I'm sure you will have worked with viewer suggestions how to get the gears selected again. Good work Mat always inspirational.
Watching you and your following grow like it has is absolutely crazy! I'm proud of you Matt! I can't comprehend how happy you must be
I totally enjoy watch Mat rebuild any vehicle. He's saw exciting and documented when it comes to the rebuilds process! Great Job all the time.
Found Mat by accident after looking for new content and seeing the M5 Video and now I’m hooked to be fair, great content from a run of the mill guy with a can do attitude and happy to learn as you go. Well done mate I’m sure you’ve inspired many others with your work and can do attitude 👌
Bro go watch from the start, you're going on a good long ride with videos and binge. Kind of jealous of you for having found him now and have so many episodes to be excited about.
I’ve had the same problem changing brake fluid on a couple of BMW’s, it was air trapped behind the calliper pistons. I had to push the calliper pistons back with the bleed valves open to remove the air, also try pumping the pedal at the same time as the diagnostic tool is working the abs pump, this worked for me
up
I thought this car had so few miles, I doubt the brake pads have been worn at all so the pistons should be all the way in anyway.
@Diego Alejandro Patiño the brake lines must have been disconnected as the rear calipers were not removed but the fronts were with the subframe.
Up!
I’ve done the automated bleeding procedure on a BMW many times using INPA. It asks you to press and release the brake pedal many times on each sequence. Also the corners should be bled in a particular order ideally. The original comment also has a very good point about the callipers possibly trapping air.
such a bold project, I am sure you'll figure it out. great job, great progress. especially like the 3 finger wheel alignment check on a 600 bhp car 😀
You are sensational to watch, I love how excited you get when you figure something out and it works makes me exited as well feeling that I am part of the team, I find myself high fiving the screen. thank you for your awesome content and videos! Cheers mate from Boston!
This man loves challenges. Buying it that money and still adding in time, emotions and mental strength. He is the man who inspires.
Been watching you for ages now and I just want to say your amazing. your working on my dream car at the moment so I hope it works out for you, only wish I was there in person to work on that beautiful monstrosity , regardless if it doesn’t end up working it’s great to see you try and save a beast of a car. Every time I see the m5 on the road they never disappoint when I give them a little taunt in my 2.0 litre car hehe , One day I will own one 🤞
Damn, you truly are insanely talented when it comes to repairing cars. Big inspiration
seeing matt's face lighten up when he first started it up, shows how much hard work he really put into this build, such a huge accomplishment, so proud of you man!
Fantastic build series Mat. Your skills never cease to amaze me with these builds. Such an overly engineered car these Bmw's. Enjoying the series. 😀
Well done Mat for making this amazing 1M achievement, waiting for the next mile stone. Super pleased with all the vids about cars and repairing them. Keep up the hard work and I think u should give a car to your dad👍🏽
"Hannah, just see if the headlights work" - brilliant! Love this mix of education, suspense and humour in your vids, Mat x
proud of you matt. you always figure it out! love the grind.
Love these videos ! Ive been working on cars for around 8 years now ! Love seeing you go for it ! At first it was cringy too watch, but I love the persistence!!
Congratulations for 1M Subscribers Mat! Still is hard to believe not even 3 years ago I was watching your videos and you had less than 80K Subscribers! What an absolute milestone! Carry on grind and making our days and we are always there for you!
Check to see if the master cylinder piston is not stuck inside the base of the master cylinder, I have experienced this if the brake pedal was pushed with calipers removed or no fluid, it may not have a return spring in the master to push it back, it's easy to tell if the pedal has little to no resistance at all. Worth a shot! Loving your videos bringing these beasts back to life!
Amazing what you can do with a positive attitude, and taking things 'bite sized' chunks at a time! Love your man, keep it up!! 🙏👌💪
Hi Mat from Australia. Love your work. I’m so impressed by your tools, equipment and innovation. How about a video on all your garage kit, why you got the things you did and what you got wrong and had to get ‘the another/better’ one etc. thanks for your work. Peter Jones.
When bleeding brakes that have been apart like this I found using a different colour fluid helped me track when new fluid was pushed through, ATE Super Blue was fab for this and you could alternate from yellow to blue each service. Also an Eezibleed kit is good for pressurising the system, I use about 25psi. You need decent pressure behind it. The computer is pulsing the ABS solenoids to try and push the fluid (and air) through so having pressure in from the top assists this.
That’s amazing! I can totally feel your joy after that mess getting sorted out. Only one thing I suggest you is not to put the battery charger directly on the battery, you want to do it on the engine bay battery points… believe me, I learnt the hard way years ago.
You have become one of my favorite youtubers so quickly. I have binged all your series and it has inspired me so much.
same!
omg same
Good on you Mat
that look of genuine surprise when you started the engine w the old charge coolers is what I’m here for
A million congratulations on your milestone. Well deserved. Keep the awesome work going.
Congratulations to 1 million subscribers, Matt! You are worth every single one of them. Keep up the good work! :)
I don't drive [ I'm a biker ] but Mat's vids are always good to watch . Best wishes all - looking forward to the next video on this or the Lamborghini .
im waiting for the part 4:( this is soo entertaining and interesting to watch
Congratulations on reaching 1M of subscribers, you deserve it! Thanks for the inspiration and for demonstation that the Hard Work Beats Talent.
He should buy a BMW 1m to build and keep with a sick wrap just for that
Congrats on the 1m subs. I found you by accident when you had the Q5 and have watched you since. I’ve given up with some other CS-tvrs as they get quite samey but your vids are always great to watch and honest. Plus yours are inspirational whilst being down to earth still. Keep up the good work Mat!
top video mate as always. I'm worried about that serpentine belt, logic says the back of the belt should be running on the water pump pulley, usually they can go on a few different ways in terms of length, however there is only one correct way. Id be looking into finding a diagram for that. Maybe the master cylinder is bypassing with the brake issue?? who knows. best of luck man looking forward to the next video
Congratulations on 1 million subscribers Matt watched you for the last few years definitely worked hard for it!
Absolutely love this build, what a dream car that is 🤘🏼
Keep going guys! Love to see how things are going and you look for a solution, while you not have any clue 😂 👍🏻
Usually you need to have a pressure bleeder regulated to 2 - 3 bar and use the diagnostic equipment to activate the ABS pump valves and someone sat in the car pressing the brake pedal all at the same time and you need to start at the furthest wheel away from the brake master cylinder. Love the vids Mat just wish they were uploaded every day lol
This is the official mercedes benz way on some of their cars, pressure bleeder set to 2-3 bar, bleed nipple open, keep pumping the pedal with the nipple open, all of a sudden you get extra air bubbles out
Like so that mat sees it
I’ve done this method a few times and it was the only way that worked
Brilliant result, that's the genuine reaction I get and can relate to when you are successful doing something, what a feeling, what a high, well done
Hi Matt, been watching your videos for a few months now (subscribed about a week ago) and they're always entertaining. Thanks for all the hard work put it on the cars and the videos and congrats on reaching 1 million subscribers.
whenever mat does a BMW rebuild I get goosebumps well done Mat another epic video 👏👏👏 that look when the car started priceless you should definitely have more videos with ur dad posted
You could double check the old water pump to see the direction it needs to turn to circulate the water and then it will confirm if your belt is on correctly
Great sound, glad to see it all went well Mat! 14:53 Quick word of advice; wear goggles/face shield when starting a car without a front end. If anything flies off or breaks it is moving fast and potentially into your face. Congratulations!
LEGEND. Mat, you NEED to send us your E24 and we will sort all the rust out on it free of charge. We are not far from you. Give us a shout, we will record and upload the entire process. Keep on the hard grind, great to see your channel grow! Congratulations on the 1 million subs!
Hi Mat, when the abs starts to work (strange noise like a small kompressor) bleeding you need to push (pump) the brake pedal - thats the way to get all the air out of the abs system.
Only if all mechanics were like this, he is very passionate in what he does, good human being too, his dad there like his mate, guru and teacher. This my new channel after work to wind down, No hidden secrets here, cheers buddy 👍👌💯💪🏽
Its a very interesting project. i love to watch a mechanic do something that the most mechanics wont. Btw, whould be nice if you sometimes show the pricelsit in Euro
Your “can do attitude” blows my mind. I’d have given up a long time ago, not to talk about the anxiety that would have developed after unsuccessfully trying to fix it first time round. Keep up the fantastic work. You’re a shining light to us all budding amateur drive way mechanics. 😆🙏
Fairplay mate. You've come so far in the last few years. Big job this and you've smashed it. 👏
You need a pressure bleeder and then do the test again because it needs to have pressure from the master cylinder😊
@Thanos would have been like it when he brought it
@djkucuk exactly my thoughts too before reading this
@Thanos that’s what I thought mate
Possibly, my thoughts was not enough pressure going through the abs module as had the same problem with Corsa vxr, Matt has to check fault codes to make sure it doesn’t have a fault
@Thanos I had a mk4 golf that happened on
"they make it sound rubbish" made my day ! Keep it up Mat, enjoying those videos !!
This man needs a Netflix show, not long finished your C63 project, enjoying this one too. Keep up the good content 👍🏻
absolute cracker of a video as usual Matt congrats so far mate can't wait to see it finished.
Great to see it all moving forward... would like to see a little more how you go... when replacing the broken electrical contacts. Thanks for this lovely video
Congrats on 1M subscribers Mat......major milestone and reward for all your effort. Well done.
we need more of your dad , droping a golden knowledge, btw Mat congrats on 1MIL.
Hi my man I enjoy watching your videos and I think it's not a bad decision to buy the M5 so far you are doing a great job with your Dad and crew
Enjoy the video? Oh yes I did! Fact is,I have been on the lookout for this one eager to learn what happened since you removed the engine. Can't seem to get enough of the exuberance, camaraderie and sheer motivation, expertise shown by the crew, including your wife and dad.Awaiting next video, car fan,Kenya.
Can't wait for part 4....well done to Mat and the team.... Marlon from South Africa
He is great 👍....the narration while fixing just makes the videos so appetizing
🇿🇦 die ou is n legend
Well done matt for getting over 1m subs. Been a watcher for a long time. Hard work beats talent and that's proven with your success. Well done pal
Hi Mat and team, I’m sure the belt should be routed with the smooth side of the belt against the smooth pulley, I can’t be sure but all other belts work this way, please double check would hate if the belt to jump off and damage anything , ps loving the build!!
The belt is routed correctly the ribbed side goes against the smooth waterpump pulley
Agreed,as I posted similar thoughts. Shame if the engine overheated. Great channel. 👍
2 things to think about for you mat. My bmw won't let you put it in gear when the door is open and I also read once that some cars are designed so the pedals collapse in a collision so you don't smash your feet/ankles 👍🏻
@Stuart Greig you can put these cars into gear with the door open. You have to keep a little brake pressure applied as you idle around. If you just come off the brake like your pulling away it’ll go back into gear thinking you fell out or some shit lol. Mine does it all the time when moving cars around.
How annoyed would he be if it was just an open door that stopped the car going into gear 🙂
🤞👌💯
I'm sure you know this, but you'll need an ECU map with them downpipes as it'll spool quicker plus it'll have the wrong AFR. Likely throw an EML. It'll be MUCH faster when tuned in though
Can't wait to see you sort them brakes out Mat I'm pressing that pedal for you mate.
my favourite CS-tvr! When I dont have a lot of time, I still make time to watch Matt's videos, very inspiring 👍🏼
You're getting better at this mechanic's stuff Mat. 👍
That was awesome. Absolutely love watching all your content. 👍🏻
There are 2 reasons I'm so HAPPY right now. 1. You hit 1 Million subscribers! Congrats Mat. Been on the ride since 250k! 2. I'm watching a 23min upload on the BMW. What a way to end the day.
I agree
Ahhh you guys were going so well , then the brakes held you up weird one that hope it gets sorted good luck guys great channel 👍👍👍👍
I enjoy this M5 videos and i like how is sounds now sounds like a beast, and its nice also to see you enjoying and also working with your old man 👌👌👌
that didn't feel like 23mins at all. it felt like 2mins and i just can't get enough of your vids. great passion!!!
I use to own one of those and it’s scary to see just how complicated they are under that cover under the bonnet. 😳
Coming from a guy that grew up in a body shop, has rebuilt many cars and enjoyed them, I tip my hat to Mat for taking this passion that many of us share to the next level. WISH I WOULD HAVE DONE THIS!! :) Maybe double check the routing of that belt...
Every episode is like watching a kid on Christmas morning...! Great fun and eminently watchable...👌🏻
1 Mil Subs! Congrats Mat! Nice to see the BMW coming nicely together. 😎
Absolutely mind blowing stuff. Well done Mat….& dad.
The work Mat puts into these builds still blows my mind
he does not put any work in
Very interesting videos never get bored watching and something to learn to do yourself thinks what's look imposible , I can't wait to look for the next step and of course for the next projects ! I know you're enjoying ...and we are enjoying too, goodluck further ?😎😁👍
A treat to see you and your Dad working together and having a great time. Memories are made from this!
Honestly your patience and memory are truly amazing
Those poor Maltesers, they went from solid to crumbs! Great video as usual Mat! Nothing from BMW is as ridulous as that £2000+ carbon fibre ashtray cover on the Murcielago...
Definitely getting better at it Mat 👍
Just a thought Mat, have you checked to see if the master cylinder piston is actually being pushed by the brake pedal. The connecting pin could have failed in the crash. I had a similar issue years ago, and the clevis pin was actually missing in the end.
But it was pumping fluid out on first bleed.
