The cutting is not so much the issue. The issue is how to take out the nut. Many people use the tip of the knife and that is where it slides away uncontrollably, resulting in stabbing the palm of the hand.
I have heard this is a common injury but I've been cutting/eating avocado daily for years and never even vaguely had a problem with this. Maybe if the avocado is way too young and is rock solid? But even then it's just so dumb
