The epidemic of the "I Know All" expert | Mikhail (Doctor Mike) Varshavski | TEDxMonteCarlo

čas přidán 14. 12. 2017
It is said that the more you learn, the less you know. However according to Mikhail Varshavski, also known as the social media star "Doctor Mike", we have too many people who believe they know it all -- also referred to as "I Know All" (IKA) experts. In his passionate talk, Doctor Mike asks us to celebrate doctors who are self-aware and say "I don't know". He also draws the importance on asking the right questions and being aware of medical research limitations and conclusions. Dr. Mikhail Varshavski D.O., is a New York-based doctor focusing on family and preventative medicine. Better known as "Doctor Mike", he is a social media entrepreneur, philanthropist, and a doctor with purpose, stressing the importance of preventative medicine by highlighting his experiences through his unique journey. Doctor Mike started documenting his medical journey through his popular social media platforms to motivate students to pursue their medical training. Doctor Mike graduated from the New York Institute of Technology in 2014 with a B.S in Life Sciences and a Doctorate in Osteopathic Medicine via an accelerated 7-year track. On June 30, 2017, he completed his 3-year Family Medicine Residency at the Atlantic Health System-Overlook Medical Center in Summit, NJ. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

  • I never said that I know all it ur assumption I was just better than u and u guys were hacking me and making fun of me HARSH TRUTH:-digest it 😀

  • I didn't know that was his name

  • Sergey Blyatimov ;O By the way, this is a speech prepared by his PR Team, as everything else on his channel. There are and there were several other people popularising science and critical thinking, but they got no attention just because they are not good looking and attractive, like this marketing product physiotherapist(yes, an osteopathic M.D. is equal to BSc. in physiotherapy in Europe).

  • Great speech, inspired.

  • 69K likes. nice.

  • I know that I know nothing.

  • I think all he wanted to say is just to hanging behind all the answers a "why?".

  • This man is a great example for NOT closing our boarders to immigrants. As an intelligent speaker as well as a knowledgeable doctor, he has the very best attributes for helping patients. Somehow, he did NOT becoming an arrogant know-it-all in med school as so many others have. One quibble: He encourages more meta-analyses of studies. BUT meta-analyses use complicated math to find "relationships" in data that are NOT NECESSARILY causal (e.g.: I have a cold and buy Kleenex - I could have a cold and NOT buy Kleenex or NOT have a cold and buy Kleenex, therefore, It's not necessarily a causal relationship) . AND those "metas" that I've examined done in life sciences often (not always) either DID NOT apply the math correctly or DID NOT interpret the results correctly. (The press definitely does not bother to understand the constraints/limits of meta-analyses when trumpeting "new findings".)

  • Hey Dr mike

  • how can he move

  • He missed chest compressions , *disliked*

  • Probably the only one that never tries to pull a joke to make the crowd laugh. Straight to the point and constant and catchy with his verve. Doctor Mike is simply the best.

  • His saliva "clicks" are giving me an anxiety attack.

  • Omg wtf is this lol cringe worthy. This man love being famous more than anything, fame do change people lol I couldn’t watch 😂 😂 😂

  • Nice

  • I want to link this to kat von d😂

  • Thats what i say to my teacher everyday

  • He is so correct.... We always misjudge self aware doctors as fools. I have seen many high paid "l know all" doctors who ridiculously drive a business instead of giving real treatment. Instead there are many less known doctors who truly cares about the patients & don't just supply random medicines. And also true doctors subtly rely on natural treatment cause they know much more about health and diseases and are aware of the reaction of chemical medicines. They want the good for us but we sadly can't see it.

  • I think I never heard the English so well spoked before.

  • Suit is too tight, looks uncomfortable!

  • *ANTI VAXERS LEAVES CHAT*

  • I feel enlightened. Was not aware this was a thing. Thank you to the publishers, as well as Dr. Mike for this video. Being an aspiring scientist, this has opened a new way of thinking for me. Quite intriguing.

  • *C H E S T C O M P R E S S I O N S*

  • That's my boy

  • I prefer i dont know over i know and give the wrong diagnosis.

  • Brilliant. I've been watching a bit of you. Thank you. For bringing a fresh look and feeling to healthcare. I wish you practiced in NYC. I live in Far Rockaway.

  • Adidas krassowski

  • Idk what's sexier, his suit or him saying his full name

  • Dr.Mike looks like he played a role on Wolf of wallstreet

  • Truly brave enough to speak out the truth about the 'business and political side' of medicine. AJA!!

  • ....Mikhail?

  • WHY IS THIS MAN SO PERFECT? I mean if he was just handsome, I would get it, but he is intelligent, a charmer, fit, knows how to dress well.. is rich.. why God? Why?

  • Update on how many IKA have watched this video: 611 and counting.

  • Why put on the glasses for a ted talk though??

    • Sally O'Connor hahah that’s true you prob can’t see anyone in the crowd anyways .. he’s the best tho

  • I love Dr. Mike but unfortunately the general patient reading level is at 8th grade or lower. Some people do not have the capacity for analytical thinking. They rely on experts to guide them, which can be a dangerous thing.

    • Alys Tarot Moonscape agh that’s creepy to think about :(

  • I've had doctors suggest tests or x-rays for unnecessary things and catch them in it. "Why would I need an x-ray of my chest?" his response "to check to see if you have an enlarged heart which may be causing your chest pain." My response "I've already had an echocardiogram that confirmed my heart is normal and healthy. The problem is I will randomly experience tachycardia. My chest pain is from the increased heart rate." He looked guilty as if he knew that the x-ray was unnecessary and said "oh ok." Forty minutes later he comes back and says "the tachycardia is from your high dosages in medication. You should get them lowered." Even though I had been taking them for 6 years and have had no issues with my heart. All other cardiologists have told me "I don't know why it speeds up like that but you can use certain techniques to stop it and if the symptoms are bothersome, you can come to the ER." I responded "do you think stress could be a factor?" He said in response "it could be possible but there could be multiple factors and we don't know for sure. What I usually tell my patients at you age in your situation is that you are young with a strong healthy heart. If you were 70 years old, I would be concerned. I don't want to put you on medication. I try to avoid that as much as I can. What I tell my patients which seems to help is to do your best to eat at regular times, eat enough food, avoid caffeine, sleep at least 8 hours consistently every night, stay hydrated, and try to get exercise. I know what its like to be studying a lot and not having time to eat or stay hydrated. I was a med student at one point. Try your best to incorporate those things." I think this is a really great response.

  • Thank you for addressing the "grey area"!!! And also mentioning stress and how impactful it is on our body and mind!!!! I live in LA and doctors are all over, but finding a good one is like playing russian roulette. It's exhausting, time consuming, and expensive to find doctors that are a good fit for you. Thank you again!
