Jason Cammisa got the exclusive first test, strapped on his equipment, and broke the record: the Lucid Air Sapphire is the world's quickest-accelerating production car.
With a staggering quarter-mile performance of 9.1 seconds at 156 mph, this 1200+ horsepower 3-motor Air beat out the reigning champion, the triple-motor, 1020-hp Tesla Model S Plaid, which runs the 1/4-mile in 9.3 seconds at 152 mph.
The cars are "tied" at 2.1 seconds 0-60, though some trivia: the Lucid Air Sapphire gets to 60 mph 0.03 seconds before the Tesla Model S Plaid.
We weren't satisfied with just that race, so we also brought along the fastest-accelerating gas-powered production car, the Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport. This is the 1479-hp (1500-PS) Chiron with shortened gear ratios, grippy Michelin Cup 2R tires, a fixed rear wing, and weight-reduction measures.
Even despite these hyper-aggressive Michelins' distaste for cold tarmac, the Chiron ripped off a 2.3-second, four-wheel-burnout launch from 0-to-60 mph, and then continued on to a 9.3-second, 156-mph quarter-mile performance. That is a tenth quicker to 60 mph than the "regular" Chiron has managed, and a tenth quicker through the quarter, too. That's an internal-combustion production-car 1/4-mile record for the Chiron Pur Sport - and we suspect that, in warmer conditions, this Pur Sport would be even quicker!
That's not the case with the 210-hp Ducati Panigale V4 SP2, one of the quickest superbikes in the world. It had no traction issues as MotoAmerica Supersport champion rider Josh Herrin cracked the throttle wide open, dumped the dry clutch, and ripped off a stupefying 9.3-second, 157-mph run through the quarter-mile.
This beat our last outing with the same Panigale, when it handily dusted a 2023 C8 Corvette Z06. This time, Ducati softened the suspension and dropped the fork; Josh sacrificed the clutch and kept the wheelie at bay. It's safe to say this is the limit for the SP2 - except that Ducati offers a factory Akrapovic exhaust and tune that boost horsepower. We'd love to come back and try that again!
But for the moment, it's clear: among production cars with four wheels, the Lucid Air Sapphire is now the acceleration king, with the Chiron Pur Sport in second place. In one video, Tesla went from first to third.
May the fight continue.

Dude, the production quality of the video is amazing. The stop-motion to pronounce the Lucid as the winner in the first race is INSANE. Props to the editor(s)!
That made the Vid....just epic editing.
How the hell did they do that??
Editors need a huge round of applause! This is gold standard ❤️
@Herman Enzo They defo positioned the cars again and are driving as slow as they can hehe, naughty naughty effect but looks amazing
That is my favorite part of this series as a whole, it's such a unique and striking way to present a drag race that they manage to turn 20 seconds of drag racing in to 10 minutes of content while always keeping things moving forward.
Just wanna say that the production value here is flipping fantastic, I hope to see more videos like this! And the writing was captivating the whole way through. Great video!!
The production was too much
The Rimac Nevera is the worlds quickest production car that runs somewhere in the mid 8's. with 1914 hp. I'm not sure why that wasn't mentioned here. Great visuals on the slo-mo at the finish line! 👍
This vid came out 6 months ago and the rimac records weren't official until last week, but yea I reckon they should redo this with the rimac for sure
The production quality of the video is jaw dropping. The stop motion was sweet and beautiful
The production quality in this video was incredible!! Keep up the great work :)
The editors need a round of applause for the quality of this video. Very entertaining!
It stinks.
@Mand I don't know why you're arguing with me about this. My fascination was with the editing of the video itself. I don't care what you think, they did a wonderful job.
lol as soon as he got out the lucid i came str8 here to say the same thing cool asl fr🔥
just warms my heart 🥹❤ and I’m happy *_go to my bio_* that it actually came out looking pretty _-+_
Now we need to see this same group do full laps around the track and see which is fastest. Great content !
This is the best car video I've seen recently. The visuals, the effects, the photography are incredible. Props to the visual team.
The editing is insane! That stop motion at the end of the race was sick!
The production quality, along with Jason and Randy is what we all want! Amazing :)
Thx for the shout, GT3RS!
That run from the rider was phenomenal. Pure skill
This is not only a drag race comparison, but also an insane level of vfx and videography. Enjoyed each second of it.
I am struggling to get my head round how insane the production value of this video is. It’s perfect. You guys have taken drag race journalism to new heights.
Don’t know if I’m more shocked by the fact that a Tesla almost beat the Bugatti or the production value 😂
@JustPokey it did beat it they just show the numbers of another run look at the difference where the Bugatti is and lucid is in different camera angles it’s an ad remember
I can see that the LUCID is king but both the LUCID and the TESLA are not very sexy looking design-wise. For me, I would still buy the 10.5-second quarter-mile Corvette Z06. This is a car that turns heads with its very striking design. The LUCID, the TESLA, and the Z06 are all about the same price at a little over $100,000.
I forgot to mention that you could also install a twin turbo on the corvette for about $20,000 and that would give you over 1,000 horsepower.
Now bring out the fastest production bike, H2R with extended swingarm pack ~ 8 sec 1/4 mile.
Out of 3cars Bugatti looks monster and aerodynamically well engineered look at her perfect curves and screamss woww pure love❤️
Great Video and insane production quality. However, i would like to point out that the Rimac Nevera has done 8.XX seconds quarter miles on non-prepped surfaces like this so perhaps you guys would like to have that on the channel as well, also the Chiron replacement won't be electric and will be hybrid (confirmed by the CEO Matte Rimac) , so one can expect even more insane acceleration times from that car
You guys keep making better and better content. Thank you for going above and beyond. Can't wait to see what you do next....
Lucid is just insane. The only electric car that I would consider buying.
I'm almost as impressed with the video production as I am about the cars. Nice work!
How Chiron starts to burnout with the four wheels at the start is looks insane.
Too much power to handle it will spin or bog even on prepped surface Gear ratios is also too short for this 1500 HP car
Dude the way the body was flexing was jaw-dropping. I don't care if something else is quicker, that car is all things legendary.
@Jon Jonzz I'm more disappointed they did not do Ducati Vs Chiron Pur Sport because that was the best race with these vehicles We might never see them again 🤦 it's done mate
@Jon Jonzz yeah the Chirons are crazy 😂 Pur Sport the most hardcore Chiron Supersport the fastest Original Chiron mixed with both
For some reason? i read this comment in german accent "is looks insane"😅
I haven't even finished watching the video and I have to say this. I've been watching throttle house a long time they have always been consistent with their content. This video has taken that quality taken it to a whole other level. Thank you guys for the ffort and work you put into this channel it shows!!
Whoever edited this video did an absolutely amazing job!!!!
The editing... give that team a raise!.. 😲
7:44 look at how the wheel is leaving the center of the wheel arch, bending the suspension forward, while creating this violent launch. Also amazing production quality and editing, thanks to everyone involved. Cammisa is an absolute legend anyway.
Yeah he is. Smart n funny
Tesla will have an answer to the Lucid.
It was interesting to watch the slow mo at the beginning. The lucid traction control seemed to be working perfect.
You better pay the editors big money. They did an excellent job 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Race was rigged. Check the front end of the Tesla at 5:28. It goes down. The Model S Driver let off accelerator. And they LIED! THE LUCID IS AN ENGINEERING PROTOTYPE, not a production car. Lucid won't start production on the Saphire until next year sometime. You can't even order one yet (try it...I did)! Let's make this fair, and compare to the current Tesla prototype, the Plaid +. Or even a Telsa Roadster, which is quicker than the S, and has a top speed of 250 mph.
@Mand bruh, for god sake, he just saying that the editors did a great job for editing, nothing else🙄🤦
@Tuan Amirul Solihin thank you 🙏
just warms my heart 🥹❤ and I’m happy *_go to my bio_* that it actually came out looking pretty _-+_
I know right it is beautiful transition I love it
I can't hold myself... This is just adorable! You could just race a few times more to keep me happy a little bit longer.
Lucid makes my favorite EV at the moment, but boy is W16 a work of art.
This is some nex tlevel Top Gear style cinematography and editing, its what Top Gear could/should have been. Good job sir, outstanding video, keep them coming! Also I'll second the notion of bringing in the Demon 170 or even the first demon into the mix for comparison along side similarly priced electrics. I like to see what different values get you in terms of performance, also wouldn't mind seeing them behave on the track as well with all that electronic gadgetry controlling traction around the corners and through the chicanes!
It would be great to compare a 1/4 mile, 1/2 mile race then lastly a mile race one after the next with all 3 cars. I'm sure the results would be interesting...
Yep, the chiron would start to play with these lengths
The buggiti would gap both in half a mile
I can’t wrap my head around how the edit pauses mid-race so flawlessly beyond literal time travel control!
cruise control at 1mph ? ;D
5:14 you can see from here that the buggatis’s driver is shifting his head around which was totally not in slow-motion. So i guess they are just creeping up slowly with some added video effects of the dust.
@Abdul Alim i don't care how they did it it looks absolutely sick
@Raf Claassens same here.
I had the chance to floor a Model S Plaid recently and the acceleration was just so scary, can't even imagine how the Lucid Air would feel
Best drag race video in recent times. Kudos to the production team 👏🏻🔥👑
That slow drop @ 4:09 was absolutely mental 🔥💯
I think I just fell in love with the Lucid. ❤
It takes a lot of skill to ride a bike like that without it throwing you off the back. Never heard of the lucid but it looks insane
Graphics in this video are top notch. Benchmark setter for the reviewers and an amazing video for the viewers
after rewatching it, they just reshot the drivers slowlyy driving the vehicle and with Jason actually stepping out of the car. adding some smoke and blur effects to make it seem super slowmo. cuz u can notice from the actual race the drivers wore helmets.
It's actually god awful, like they try to cater to highschoolers.
@Johnny L. are you sure you rewatched? I just rewatched and they didnt have helmets on at the starting line
these "effects" are exhausting to watch. I want to see the races and not endless talking a useless graphic effects.
@N S you are slow
Wow!!! Got the feels and thrills of an actual professional race by watching this video and man the production quality is downright spectacular
OMG! What an epic video! The production quality and presentation of this video gave me goosebumps.
7:07 that deep note playing when Jason introduces the Ducati is simply perfection.
The freeze frame shots at the finishing line is mind blowing. How they do that?
Both times the lucid was seating on the racing line which means it had more traction due the rubber in the tarmac. In 100% same tarmac would still win but probably with less gap. Great video and the engineers in Lucid did a great job (many of them worked in rimac which expains a lot).
The quality of this channel is so high it's crazy! Keep up the good work!
way too much fluff for my taste, its like theyre trying to compete with carwow on who can make a drag race last 10 minutes
Man, they blow minds
@modest mouse colored person no comparison....just loving both, but the edits and stuff here without any long talks is very interesting
I like the Guy left MT and nailed it! My kinda Hero
how did they film that that is next level editing
The editing of this video put chills down my spine. Can’t help not the like and fellow. Keep up the great work.
Thanks for being a fan, Thomas!
What in the world did I just see. 😮 I’ve never seen such amazing production quality out into a CS-tv video.
Man that was a masterclass in video editing. There are levels to this. 🤯🤯👌🏾👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
I honestly did not expect the high quality of this video. Props to the production team
Not only was this video very well edited the humor was also very satisfying to watch lol good video!
Editors deserve a raise too. This was epic once again
Ikr
Make sure to press the like button! These videos are underrated!
Cringe
Impressive editing but totally unnecessary
Thank you for being a fan! Stay tuned for more videos.
3:52 That was the most insane transition I have ever seen in my life.
Subscribed! If you ever get the chance, I'd love to see a Dodge Challenger Demon 170 take on these cars. With 1,025 hp, it'll do 0-60 mph in 1.66 seconds and a quarter mile in 8.91 seconds. That is on a prepped dragstrip, but it should be very competitive nonetheless.
i would assume on normal asphalt it wouldn't be able to even do a sub 11 quarter mile
It'll do that on a prepped surface, with semi slicks, with a 1 foot roll-out. Which is stupid. It'll be left for dead by all of the vehicles in this video under the same circumstances.
Not quite sure how you came to the conclusion that an RWD 1025hp car would beat AWD cars that have more power. You can put Mullet next to those cars and it'll not be competitive, because all it'll do is either hammer into the traction control (because there's no traction to be had on bare asphalt, compared to literally driving on fucking glue - so it'll reign itself in to 600-700hp which is the upper limit for RWD traction on asphalt) or turn the rear wheels into smoke. All the way down the strip. In fact, i'd wager that a factory 911 Turbo S would beat the Demon in this situation. Maybe not on a drag strip, but guaranteed on a landing strip or similar.
Agree. Prepped drag strip is game changer. This is plain dirty asphalt. Amazing cars! We gotta Bugatti! 👍😁
seriously impressed both races were in the same vid. absolutely entertaining
Your videos and explanations are awesome. It feels like 8m watching a movie. Good work.
Insane production quality. Immediately subscribed.
You know what's cooler than the Lucid Air Sapphire? The editing on this video. Absolutely knocked it out of the park!
You’re definitely not an ad comment
@Joseph P Not sure what you mean. Like advertising for myself? Or I’m a bot? I simply thought the video was incredibly well made and wanted to comment about it.
I was sad the video ended. I'm like, That's it?? It felt like a movie!!
Wow, that slowmo in this video is really next level.. i love the robotic background sounds and the editing 🔥 daaang i love it
I notice that Panigale was going 1mph faster at the end though. He was catching him!
Whoever edited this deserves a room full of awards
It took me a bit, but I understand how you guys pulled off the slow mo reveal. Fantastic work! Well executed.
Jason as always you have the best Automotive Videos on the Worldwide Web Congrats to you and your Team!!
The editor(s) and writer(s) don't get enough praise for this. The way those videos are created is insane!! It's not just editing skills, you have to plan every move BEFORE recording so you get the right angles, and the best lines as well for the storytelling. This channel is putting top-notch television shows to shame, well done!
Thats true bro i rate jason as the best automotive journalist..everything was well planned out
Jason and Anthony are just insane. Great partnership with Hagerty to add the production budget they needed.
Lucid was going out of business a few weeks. Now everybody wants a Bugatti destroyer Lucid Saffire
@Osvany Tolosa i gonna give this tons of credit for this epic drag race.
@Shawn Crandon Shawn, ARG vs FRA for the 2022 World Cup Final tomorrow. Who will win? I bet France gonna win tomorrow. You?
INSANE production value guys. Just amazing. ♥️
coolest and greatest edit of a drag race i've ever seen, good job guys ! WE NEED MORE !
Oh wow!!! Lucid makes such awesome cars!! 🎉
Keep making epic videos like this and you will have millions of peeps loving to watch you
Instant subscribe. The editing and cinematography is absolutely incredible.
I've never seen such a high quality video like this one ever in my life, this is on a completely different level, editors deserve a raise
the fastest car is Aspark Owl
9:10 professional idiot hahahahhaha
You guys must never watched Bugatti company vehicles go to their page they have the best videos eyes can ever meet
Insane video production, you guys set bar too high. Welldone everyone contributed in this.
can we just appreciate the fact that that Panigale is pushing 210HP. WTF!
Dude, this video is absolutely fantastic. How on earth did you do that slow motion? That was crazy af !! Loved it !!
THIS WAS INSANE!!! Thank you! ❤
Doesn’t matter how many races I watch from you guys, that effect where you get out of the car at the finish line while the cars are still moving is one of the coolest editing techniques in existence!
This video doesn’t need to be ten minutes. The electric cars win. They have no power band. They have instant power and torque.
@chivacetana but there’s nothing like hearing that engine growls behind your ears
@chivacetana not really, the plaid lost to the Chiron
@Shahrokh Youssefi yes because it wasn’t engineered as well as the sapphire. but the potential of the electric motor is much higher than a combustion engine
It's not editing, I hate to spoil the illusion ut you'll realize it sooner or later
The production is insanely well done.
I mean, once you watch any recent videos from Hagerty... its hard to watch anything else car related on the whole YT platform. OMG, speechless! and cant wait to pre-order my Sapphire summer of 2023!!!! LUCID TAKE MY MONEY!
Such an epic video. Greatest drag race ever. I'm dying to see that Chrion from a 40 or 60 roll vs. the sapphire - would be the wildest run ever I don't know who would win.
Kudos to Cammisa for providing an electrifying drag race that highlights the incredible capabilities of these cars and their potential impact on the future of the automotive industry.
OK - the FX at the finish line are messing with my mind!! FANTASTIC production!! The cars are awesome too...the Bugatti catching the Tesla was amazing.
can we appreciate how mental this video production is, no matter what the energy kept going.
Totally agree!
As a videographer myself i have to admit that the quality of this video is insane!
It's about time we get a movie with fast cars done by this team
Damn, that sound of the Bugatti makes my heart flutter ❤
This video is INSANE! I love it. Amazing under every aspect. Well done!
Loved it, great video and so impressive power and speed
Holy crap I’ve never seen such advanced editing. Y’all better be paying them well
Based on a lot of people being self employed and what YT pays out these days, I hope so too.
The sound of those engines is epic and the fact that the editor is more excited about the quality of each vehicle is amazing. Love me some fast cars….!!
You mean the Bugatti and the bike right ?😂
The editing in this video is insanely good
such a well made video. you just brought it to another whole level!
Plaid : $110,000 Sapphire : $250,000 and not in production Buggati : $3,000,000
Hmm I rather have 2 plaids and a nice family vacation.
That sapphire gone be nice though 😂. 100% true what you said. And you left out the bike.
Plaid ftw
@Jump Street24 Bike is 100,000
The tesla plaid is absolutely not even close to 110k, is more like 180k
I'd love to see a slalom review. that IMO is a true test of a vehicles speed. Agility, acceleration, braking, etc......
Can’t even imagine how scary it must be to feel the front wheel bouncing off the ground while going 200mph
Honestly, you get used to it. The bikes are very stable
Anything above 150mph is surprisingly stable on a sports bike. It’s full throttle from 0-100 that’s a bit scary, but you get used it.
@NesbittRacing that tiny thing is stable? damn
@TheWeeknd♕ yep, over 30mph they'll right themselves and over 100 they actually take quite a bit to lean over
And what was going 200mph in this race? Derp.
Hagerty videos have the best production quality of any automotive videos I have ever seen. It tops even top gear.
Now I would like to see the Liucid Air vs the Tesla Plaid Vs the Model 3 around a track. Will the strait line speed make up for the weight in the corners.
They should definitely do closed races on long stretches of the autobahn.
Well done. Watched this in a Tesla Model Y and could feel its subwoofer really well for the first time. Wow! Lotsa love from Toronto to ❤❤❤
Great production. Love Jason's way of presenting things.
The four-wheel burnout of the Chiron, the way the Lucid just disappears, the way the Chrion regains everything it lost to the Tesla by the line, and that motorcycle rider -- all of it is just INSANE. Low 9''s for everyone on a dusty racetrack... these things are all stupid stupid fast. I'm glad you could capture the drama for this incredible video!
But they're racing downhill. Not a true 1/4 time
@fbird90nw more like 0 to 1000m time.
Oh man.. Wow.. This is superb content creation with masterpiece of special effects. If somebody wants a director and crew to a new action movie. These guys will done the job with blockbusters. ❤❤❤
The production of this video is crazy! I've never seen anything like this before on this platform! The stop motion is incredibly good! Great work to the production team!👍🏻🫡
I don't know what's more astounding, the cars performance or the quality of this videos production and editing.
20 seconds in is when I realized that was MotorTrend’s very own Jason Cammisa!
The editor did an amazing work!!
