My uncle told me about the Cambridge Climbers in the 1930s and 1940s - guys from the university who went all over the city, up and down towers and spires, without ropes or safety gear and without touching the ground. The thing that got me was the did it in their everyday clothes - corduroy trousers, shirts and ties, tweed jackets and, get this, leather shoes complete with polished soles!
